I've tried with no luck to insert a unicode character ? from the character
map dialog box within the mtext editor. How is that accomplished? Thanks in
    advance for your help?

In the mtext editor, type in the keystroke combo shown at the lower right in
character map. For instance ALT+0128 is ?. You have to use the numbers from
the numeric keypad, not the ones at the top of the keyboard.

Oops, the oddball character didn't show correctly in my message.

That doesn't seem to work for me. What's wrong?

Once in the Character Map dialog box, select the symbol that you wish to
use. Pick the Select button at the bottom of the box. The symbol you need
will now appear in the Characters to copy box. Pick the Copy button. You can
now minimize or close the Character Map box. Return to the Mtext editor
box. Right-click > Paste your characters in the mtext editor. Have fun
playing with the text size so that it is scaled correctly with the
    surrounding text. Heat, eat, enjoy.

I don't know why it wouldn't work. The same procedure should work in most
any application. You have to use the numeric keypad.

Possibly the text font you're using doesn't contain that character, which
will cause Acad to display a question mark instead. Try a normal character,
for instance ALT+0056 is the numeral 8.

Unicode characters can be inserted using the form: \u+NNNN where NNNN
is a legal hexadecimal address. This info is in the Acad user manual.

Also visit unicode.org web site; they try to specify addresses where
    characters should be located.

  8. You'll have the best success using the "\u+hhhh"
    key ins.

    I didn't even think about the select-copy-paste routine -- all I use
character map for is a reference on ASCII codes. I think I've seen cases
where other apps didn't agree with the copy-paste business. Plus I'm just
used to the key-ins from way back.

Remember decorating your DOS apps with the box-drawing characters? I used to
    have them memorized.
