    Hi ! I'd like to know if there is an easy way of doing the above;
preferably without the use of expensive 3rd party services/software
(I'm on a tight budget!). I understand that the two formats use
different kernels and do not share a common standardised format :-(
    Many thanks in anticipation

  2. You can buy the IGES converter for AC too, if it's suitable for
complex nurb surfaced based 3 faces (entity #128, 144 etc.)...
    I doubt this.
    IGES doesn't support layers.

Check the free SolidWorks X-changeWorks for AC, does provide many
    filters as e.g. IGES etc.

    good luck

I use XchangeWorks to frequently import IGES files into AutoCad. As an
I-Deas & AutoCAD user, I find it very helpfull.
It will import IGES, step, sat, vga, Parasolid, UG, & sldprt from within
AutoCad via a cutdown version of Solidworks that opens upon import.
It's not bulletproof, but I've had very little trouble with it.

    www.xchangeworks.com
Fill out the form and they will send you a CD.

Correct. This is why I said, "make sure each part in the bin of I-Deas is
exported as a seperate file so you can assign them to different layers in
Autocad. If this is not done, you will get a huge mess in one layer when
    imported into AutoCad."

When the IGES file is imported, it is placed on only one layer in AutoCad.

For clarity, I should of said, make sure each part of the model in the bin
of I-Deas is exported as a seperate IGES file. That way each individual
IGES file can be imported as a seperate layer in AutoCad.
