How to Redefine V8 Cell Origin

Discussion in 'Microstation' started by Warren A. Newhauser, Jan 5, 2004.

  1. I have a v8 cell library in which I want to redefine the cell origins.

When I open the cell library I use the DEFINE CELL ORIGIN tool, it places
the little "+" symbol ok, but when I try to place the cell, the origin is
    still in the old location.

Do I have to delete & reconstruct the cell? Is the cell origin automatically
defined as (0,0,0)? The v8 doc's do not mention redefining cell origin.

    TIA,

    Warren

  2. Hi Warren.

The little + symbol is a transient element that resides in memory ... To get
rid of it, click on the Define Cel Origin tool again. Not only will it get
rid of the + symbol, but you can now re-define a new location by entering a
datapoint. It's kind of like a fence whereby the Place Fence tool is used
to dismiss the current fence or draw a new one.

As for the location of the origin. If you create a cell the same old way
that you did in V7, then the graphics of the cell will be populated cell
library and the cell origin will be positioned at 0,0,0.

On the other hand, if you create a cell directly in the cell
library...meaning that it is the open and active file....then you can place
the origin where ever you want.

    Hi Warren,
first you have to understand the concept of models in V8.
A V8 cell library is a V8 drawing, i.e. you can open and edit it like a
drawing. In this drawing, each cell is a model. The graphic elements of the
cell are placed so that the origin is at 0,0,0.
To redefine the origin you have to move all elements in the model so that
the new origin is at 0,0,0. That's all. Good luck!

  4. Martin,

Thanks! That seems so obvious...but either it didn't make it in the docs or
    I missed it.

Instead of moving the cell to the Origin, you can also move the Origin
to the cell. Redefine the Global Origin by keying in: "GO=0,0,0"
("GO=0,0" for 2D files) and setting a data point on the new origin.
