How to do grooves or channels around exterior of shapes?

I'm finding I have to do some shapes that I can't see the best way to model
    them in SW2k4.

For example, I have a part that is essentially a rectangular block. It has
shallow depressions on it, not really a problem. But it also has several
parallel grooves on it that start on a flat face, run to the edge, wrap
around, wrap again, then finish partway into the face opposite the start
    point.

I can't see which SW drawing tool I would use to create these?

Use a cut sweep feature. Look up sweep in the help.

The cut sweep will work, but you'll want to use a projected curve to create
the path. You may have to get tricky to start the curve in the middle of a
face, like splitting the face before creating the projected curve.
