How do you "cancel" an action?

It seems difficult to get out of an operation in Wildfire. For
    example, I started a new part: Edit>Setup>Material>Define - I am
prompted to "Enter material name" then I decide "No, I changed my mind
I want to 'Assign'", but I can't get rid of the prompt! tried hitting
the Escape button and a host of other attempts. On the dashboard there
is a check mark to Accept value, but the Cancel input option is
    dimmed. Please help!

Often, to 'cancel' the input action, it is just necessary to hit return (or the
check mark) at a blank line. Pro/e is not a Windows program and has never known
anything about the Esc key for cancelling. The check mark and the x are just the
old actions, but gussied up with icons.
