How can i let window come on top using SKILL

Discussion in 'Cadence' started by Reotaro Hashemoto, Mar 20, 2007.

  1. Hi,
There's some thing boaring in Cadence that i hope i can find a
    solution for it...
Sample of it can be clear from the following description:

In Virtuoso Schematic composer, when you select a component, then
press 'q' it displays the properties window, but if you unintentionly
pressed in the composer main window, the previous properties window
will be hidden behind it, and remain hidden without any notification
when you press 'q' again on the same component or another component!!

This is a sample to show the problem, it occures in many other cases.

I think there's some way to let the hidden come to top of other
windows when the command calling it is performed again.. Can anyone
tell me how to do it please??

    Thanks in advance,

What I do is press F3 two times to hide/show the option form. It appears back on top.

  3. Sorry, but i have some questions..
What is the platform you run tools on? and what's the version you use?
For me, I run IC5.1.44 on Suse 10.2 and at Faculty lab we run it on
    FC4
The problem looks like an OS issue..

    Thanks for help
    Regards,

  4. No, it is not an OS issue, it is a window manager issue. Depending on
what window manager you use, you have to modify the way the desktop
    handles focus stealing of windows.

You didn't tell what window manager you use ...

I use KDE and saw the same behaviour until I went into the KDE Control
Center, Desktop -> Window Behaviour, Tab Advanced, Focus stealing
    prevention: None

For Gnome I don't know what or how to do the setting.

  5. Hi,

    Thank you Svenn :)
    It worked !!
But i hope that you explained the meaning of what i did!!
What is focus stealing?? And what else programs will it affect rather
    than these tools?

    Thanks and regards,

Sorry, I didn't read your post carefully enough. The F3 key will obviously work only for option forms.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focus_stealing

Basically, it's about allowing or not raising windows to the top depending on the circumstances.

Sometimes, does what you like, sometimes, not.

The gnome window manager (metacity) does not allow turning off the focus stealing prevention (at
least I know of no way). It this is a problem, the only workaround is to use another window manager.
I personally use xfwm4 (the xfce window manager) which works very well.

  7. Does the term "Window manager" express KDE, GNOME, etc? Or what
    exactly?
And how can i know my system "Window manager" ? Is there a command or
    something like that?
I'm sorry, it seems that it's turned into Linux discussion, but i
believe that this will help in solving common Cadence issue!

    Thanks alot,

No, GNOME, KDE, CDE, etc., are "desktops", which encompases a whole suite of
    features including the window manager.

Under KDE you have no choice of window manager.

Under older versions of GNOME, the default window manager was sawfish, and
with the current version it is metacity. Under GNOME you can specify a
    different window manager.

The window manager is the program that puts the "frame" around the window that
has the minimize, maximize, close, etc., buttons on it. The window manager is
responsible for managing windows and whether and which is on top, iconizing
    (a/k/a minimizing), etc.
Normally, for KDE it is (I think) kwm, for CDE it is normally dtwm, older
Motif desktops used mwm, OpenLook used olwm, and there are a plethora of
window managers available such as twm, fvwm, etc.

If you only have one X server running on the machine, you can use ps to
figure out which is running, but if you have multiple X servers it is a little
trickier (unless they are all running the same window manager).

  9. As far as I know it is only the Cadence tools that does focus stealing
this way. And I hope it will go away with 6.1. (I haven't tried it). I
am a notorious KDE user, and I have so far not found any problems with
the focus stealing setting to none with the way I work. I use alt-Tab
and ctrl-Tab a lot to change between the windows on the desktop.
