Honeycomb Panels with COSMOS

    Anyone have any success modelling honeycomb panels with COSMOS? We are
    trying to model CF skins with AL cores, but have a large number of
    questions. Here is what we have so far:

    Elastic Modulus (Pa or N/m2)
    X face material modulus of elasticity compression
    Y face material modulus of elasticity compression
    Z ???? - use face material value?

    Poissons Ratio
    X face material poisons ratio
    Y face material poisons ratio
    Z ???? - use the same as face material value?

    Sheer Modulus
    XY 30% of facing stress
    YX 30% of facing stress
    XZ calculate via the core sheer on the plate

    Density
    - calculate from specs


    Tensile Strength - the strength of the adhesive bonding the skin to
    core
    - double the tensile strength of the core material (yikes!)

    Compressive Strength
    - double the compressive strength of the core material (yikes!)


    Yield Strength
    - 5% more than tensile strength (???)

    What are "sandwich elements"? I am unable to find this in SW or
    Cosmos. Is this what you use to model honeycomb panels? Pray tell...

    You can't find it because it is not there. Sandwich elements or
    layered shell elements are probably on the to do list for CosmosWorks.
    They are in Cosmos/M which you may or may not have depending on which
    package of CosmosWorks you have. If you have geostar in your install
    directory you may have Cosmos/M. In that case you can create the mesh
    in CosmosWorks as a shell mesh and then define the appropriate
    properties in Cosmos/M for the model.

    The other alternative is to see if CW supports orthotropic material
    properties, but then you will have to generate the appropriate values
    for Ex, Ey, Ez, etc. and make sure the elements properties are lined up
    in the correct direction.
