Help with Control Characters in Strings

    I am teaching a short course in AutoLISP for the Greater Chicago AutoCAD User Group and have run across 2 Control Characters that I have never understood.
    \e escape character
    \nnn octal code character
    Any help in what they are used for and examples of how (and/or why) they should be used would be greatly appreciated.
