I don't remember where, but I'm fairly sure I've seen this done in a sample.
I thought it was in Bill Kramer's book, but a quick scan through it, I
    couldn't find it.

The example I remember stated that while you can't stop the event from
happening, you can at least deal with it. The sample code actually
recreated a deleted object. (It pulled all of the object properties from
the object, then after the deletion, it recreated a copy of it.)

Sorry I can't dig up more specifics at the moment.

Perhaps, you can handle BeginCommand event? This event handler procedure has
a string argument "CommandName". If the CommandName is "ERASE", then do
    something.

I can't because event come before selection and selectionchange not work
    with active command.
