Is there a better way than this?

Save the assembly under a new name. Open the part to be modified and save
the part as a new part. Go back to the new assembly. Delete the old part.
    Insert the new part.

Open the assembly (nothing else open)
    Open the part
Do a saveas on the part
    close the part
Do a saveas on the assembly

  3. What is it you are trying to do? If you want to make a new assembly because
it has a new part in it, I would just modify the part, save it with a new
name, then save the assembly with a new name. Am I missing something?

You could use DBWorks PDM, with it you can use a function that allows you to
duplicate whole assemblies in one go, and still keep the old version for
    history..
