My boss is thinking of buying a 256MB ATI Fire GL v7200.
Is it worth? What do you think about?

How much faster than instantaneous will suffice? AutoCAD simply does
not push the envelope in graphics. A very basic video card will do
about as well as a high-end one. Now if you're using Inventor or some
other 3D CAD software which uses OpenGL and with which you might be
trying to revolve an assembly with 500 parts THAT's a different story
indeed. The 256Mb of video RAM and the special processor to resolve the
    graphics would actually be used.

I'll use it for AutoCAD and 3dsMAX, architectural renderings.
I know it's quite a nice one, but I'm not sure I need something like that.

For AutoCAD 2007, there are recommended, supported, and not supported
graphics cards. Go to the main AutoCAD web page, then system requirements.
