While I am uncertain of the cause of your text issue (accidentally
being in model space is one) there is an ongoing error I run into with
mtext. This problem has spanned several releases and prevents you from
successfully editing the size of the text.

The Mtext editing window seems to be set to a certain range when you
first open that window. However, often you can just change the text
to the size you want, and even though it doesn't display correctly in
the text editing window, when you close that window, the text displays
    OK in the drawing.

The second problem is you can change the text size in the editing
window, but the sizes seem to jump to certain increments. Eg. I have
text at .125" Height, but some of the text to be smaller. If I change
some of the text to .100", I can't see any size difference. Then if I
choose .090", it suddenly jumps to being MUCH smaller. The only work
around I've been able to find is to explode the MTEXT, then edit
individual lines to be the size you want. I normally just use the
command SCALE on the individual lines to obtain the size I want.
