Does anyone know if there is a way to convert the 3D plane models in MS
Flight Simulator 2004 to STEP or IGES?

I think theres a design program made by abacus that allows conversion from
dwg/dxf; presumably, it should allow to reverse a model into dwg/dxf format
but thats that. the aircraft in fs2004 are fairly limited in detail so don't
    expect much.

Planning on some copyright violations against Microsoft?

Probably not, Cliff. There's 'way more freeware models out there than
MS provides, and MS encourages and provides free tools for their
creation. Plus, any model you could make in SW is just the bare
beginnings of what you need to get a good looking, functional model
    into Flight simulator.

Flight simulator is a fairly "open" program. There's a huge
aftermarket of payware, shareware and freeware add-ons, including
airports, aircraft, extra instruments, charts, scenery, etc., none of
which SW would be of much use for.

    Tom,
Such are all in addition to.
Last I heard MS was very concerned about violations of their
    copyrights.

IF someone wants a model FROM MS software that MS used
I'd suggest contacting MS to see if it can be legally obtained.
They might be happy to help; I don't know.

For the record, it is a 3rd party addon plane, not one that came with
the software from MS. All I want to do with it is create a model that I
can use to design an RC plane from. Last I heard there were no
copyright or patent issues with making models of anyones airplane,
though some were trying to make an issue of it.

    You said MS.
Then I'd ask the third party.
They might be more than happy to help you. Offer
pictures of your results, if any, when done or something.
You might even get business out of it someday, for all
I know. Honesty counts for a lot with some.

If it's a 3rd party add-on, most developers that I've seen on the 'net
more than happy to let you have enough geometry to get an RC plane
model going. The meat of development in an MS plane is much more than
that; it's flight dynamics, instrumentation and control, panel views,
cockpit viewsm sounds, getting the props/fans, landing gear animations
and control surface animations to look correct; getting the aircraft to
"shine" properly when turning, etc. If you contact the developer,
payware or freeware, they ought to be happy to help out with geometry
    of some sort.

    Check out http://www.fightsim.com for starters...
