Finding people who know 3D is difficult!

    Just a rant...
We created a basic 3D test to give to applicants. We tested a couple of our
users to be sure it could be completed in reasonable time. They completed
the test in around 20 Minutes of 30m limit. Out of 10 applicants, only a
couple came close to finishing 80%. 1/2 can't even finish the 2D part. One
guy marched out saying I can't take this test!

The test really separates the resume embellishers from the people who know
their stuff. I'm amazed how difficult it is to find 3D AutoCAD users. We've
been 3D for 10 years now. Our geographic area is a bit depressed. There
should be a lot of people available.

Face it I run into bunches of people who used to or want to use
AutoCad. There are very few who really do. They are hard to find and
    harder to keep.

As a rather senior CAD person, I can tell you that we found CAD tests under
    pressure
don't work. Many who are very good in CAD are bad under the clock. Sort of
    like being
a good runner but a lousy sprinter. We came to the conculsion to avoid tests
    when possible
however if you have to test you will learn much more on a "take home" test
    for 24 hours if
thats possible. Let them have the time to give you there best, then you can
    review and decide
    from there.

Well I'm doing a City & Guilds 3D AutoCAD, after self learning from books I
decided the bit of paper might help me in getting into work, now some of the
methods in the course booklet are so just to long winded and I know there a
much quicker ways of doing the end drawing but get told to do it "BY THE
    BOOK"

The two guys that wrote the course are, in my opinion, way out of touch
with industry and the shortcuts/quick methods in use.

It comes to this if a guy has only done 3D drawings the one way, from a long
winded tutorial booklet, he's bound to find the test difficult and may be
    run out of time.

But the conundrum is this who's to blame him for what he's has learn on his
course or the two guys who wrote the course materials or both party's.

  6. ...and still using a 2D cad??

Maybe better switch to something capable as e.g. SWX instead of
torturing people with 2D AutosSCRAP... *scnr*

why do you come to alt.cad.2D AutosSCRAP anyway?

It is sort of a 3D model layout with a foundation, columns and tanks. The
columns, tanks, and tank bases are to be drawn in 3D. There are lots of
extruding and copying that can be used. There is dimensioning and annotation
as well. It was based on the type of drawings we produce.

that sounds like quite a project for a guy without his own settings
    customized & drawing for free.
how long would it take you to do it & how long do you give the testees?

  13. because it's funny to read how many AutoSCRAP users are thinking that
AC is the only CAD on earth and that they can do everything with
    it... including making coffee..

    just kiddin'

Maybe your test is not as fair as you thought.
It's not necessarily intuitive to create a test that really demonstrates the
ability of someone "foreign" to your outfit, and evn less so to create a test
that shows the "foreigner's" ability to adapt and perform in your working
    environment.

If really none of the applicants were able to complete the test, and you
in-house guys did it quickly and easily, you might want to take a more
objective look at the test you've designed.

The drawing is preset with the views. They just have to draw. I'm not sure
how I could do. I'm the IT person. I don't use AutoCAD. I know enough to be
dangerous. I've done LISP anf menu programming for production. I still think
I could nearly complete it. I'm amazed at how many people can barely get the
2D part of the drawing started. It is just lines circles and arcs with
trim/extend and some copying. They get 30 min. to finish.

In three or four cases, only a few lines and circles were drawn and not even
to the proper dimensions. One person used their time to draw ONE circle and
a line! Why do they even bother!

We know it will challenge. We don't expect them to complete or be perfect.

    Good points.

We don't expect them to finish, just to demonstrate their ability in 2D/3D
and other skills (dimensioning, reading drawings...) We have tested a few
more and thus far, see three people suitable for hire. So many people
embellish their resumes, this really makes them show their stuff.
