File extensions

This happened three times in one year and may happen more and more times to
anyone who use AutoCAD and have a custom screen saver...

Friend of mine (he worked for our company some time) called me few days ago
and asked me for help with his script file problem.

He complained that when he double clicked the script file (SCR extension
file), the default editor, the notepad, did not open the script file, in
addition to file icon he was frustrated moreJ. As we all know, some, maybe
most, of screen savers use the same file extension as AutoCAD script file
(SCR). After the screen saver installation, the screen saver application
redefines the SCR file type in the registry and SCR file no longer becomes
associated with notepad on open, print etc. events. So I provide him (my
friend), long way of step to step SCR file type re-association to open,
print etc. events trough explorer "Folder Option" menu. The same problem I
had noticed with PLT and PAT file types. For me it is not a big deal; any
file extensions I can redefine in few seconds. However for middle AutoCAD,
and in general, computer users, this can be a real problem. I can create my
own windows based utility to redefine a file type in the registry and I
think would be a good idea to have this kind of tools available inside
AutoCAD, so other, "bad", people will not be able to "steal" AutoCAD file
types. Here is an idea: Why don't license the file extension, the file type.
    Say DWG, SCR, PAT etc.

Sounds to me like they should get back to work and stop clicking on screen saver files.

  3. You can edit them with Notepad without changing any file types or redefining
or re-associating anything. Rather than double-clicking the file name in
Windows Explorer or My Computer, instead open up Notepad first, and Open the
file from inside the program. (You will have to select to display "All file
types" instead of the default where it shows you only .txt files.) In fact,
you can even open a real screensaver file in Notepad this way, though
    they're just gibberish.

I'm surprised at the problem, though, because when I installed AutoCAD
(ADT2004), the computer's brains switched to considering .SCR files to be
AutoCAD Scripts, not screensavers, and when I double-click on them, I do get
them opened in Notepad. I have the opposite problem -- if I want to preview
a screensaver by double-clicking on it (which I used to be able to do), I
can't; I have to go into the Display Screensaver tab and preview it in
there. I've even tried getting into the file-to-program associations to
change that, but .SCR isn't even on the list, somehow.

    All is about convenience.

When you type SCR at the command prompt then, through windows open dialog,
you can right click and open a script file (or any file), if something you
need to edit; In fact that window is an explorer object and you can do
anything that windows explorer does on its "original" interface. This is the
fastest way of editing the script file while running it and it very
    convenient.

  5. Hi,

With files with an SCR extension being a favourite format for 'malware' I
would make double clicking on an SCR file a sackable offence.

No way would I deal with such a file without being absolutely certain it was
    safe.

Or open notepad and drag and drop your scr file into notepad.
I hate running through network directories.
