File date stamping error suddenly

I've succesfully run R14 on Win98 for about 5 years - possibly the most
stable program that I run. Half way through today I notice that when
    updating and saving any
routine DWG files, the current (system) date isn't applied in the (explorer
    style)
file listings anymore. It's using the original date even though the revised
    file
content is correctly saved. DATE on the command line correctly brings up
the current system date, etc. Create a new file and that shows a spurious
date from a couple of years back. Load up an old file (saved pre R14),
save that and everything is correctly updated. I've rebooted a time or two,
and I've restored all the ACAD program files from
a backup but the fault is still there. I'm not aware of having done
anything unusual. None of the help screens/manuals is any help. ALL my
other programmes are saving using the current system date like you'd expect.
Does anyone have any suggestions please??

Thank you R K, for your reply. It has resolved the problem without
forfeit. I would never have worked that out, and still don't understand why
it changed like that as it was set to the default value of 50.
