Faceted rendering of curved 3D models

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by fernandoronci, Nov 17, 2005.

  1. Hi,

Is there a way to tune Autocad's settings to eliminate faceting in
rendered revolved or extruded solids ?
For example, rendering a revolved closed polyline results in a faceted
output. I posted a couple of examples at
http://www.sola.com.ar/acadrendering that illustrate what I'm saying.
Faceting not only affects the rendered revolved or extruded solids, but
also other simpler solids such as cylinders, cones and torus. As a
matter of fact, any solid of revolution gets faceted when rendered.

I tried different values for ISOLINES (minimum, maximum and
    intermediate) to no avail. I also scaled the models x 10, x 100, x 0.1
and x 0.01 but that didn't make any difference either. Anti-aliasing is
set to "High" on the "Render Options" window, by the way.

I did all renderings on Autocad 2000. I checked and could verify that
the same happens on Autocad 2005.

I suppose this must be sort of a well known rendering fact, at least
    with the default settings.
So, can anyone point me in the right direction to obtain
state-of-the-art renderings with Autocad, or at least a workaround to
    eliminate faceting ?

    Thank you,

    Fernando Ronci

  2. Can't be done, I'm afraid. You'll need another application to get that.

  3. Which application would you recommend for rendering ? (If not very
    pricey, much better).

    Thanks.

    set DISPSILH to 1

then try the HIDE command and the isolines will be gonzo. also when you
    plot.

    garth.

How about changing rendered object smoothness along with arc and circle
smoothess along with segments per polyline curve in the preferences
    performance tab

increase FACETRES. I usually leave it at 2, I think it can go to ten.

There is a related variable, look to "see also" to point that out.

You can not eliminate the facets in AutoCAD or most renderers these days. If
you have lots of time, using facets that are no bigger than a single pixel
should be the same or as close to the same as you would need.

Just now I rendered a cylinder (VIZ) at 1600x1200 pixels with 64 sides. They
were still barely visible if I looked for them. And I tend to be more picky
about that than the average user. For most practical applications, 32 is a
better target max. Handrails on the other side of the room can use 4.
