external reference terror

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by Lee Bazalgette - Factory, Feb 9, 2006.

  1. hey, could someone else verify this:

    SW2006 SP3
    Win XP Pro
    lots of RAM
    lots of Processor
    etc

When I go to do a revision of an assembly, not having PDF works, I go to
save as, then I go to the references thing and up the revision number of all
my referenced parts, then I go back and up the assembly revision then hit
    go.

Now all my referenced parts have the little dreaded '?' next to them.
    Arrrgh: terror.

But then close the assembly and re-open and they all go nicely into being
    solved again.

A bug or is it just me?

    Thanks

    LB

    Lee,

When you say you reopen the assembly and the referenced parts are you
referring to the original version or the version with the updated
revision number? Is the assembly you are reopening the original or the
updated assembly? Obviously when you do what you describe you are
creating another file for each one you renamed. It is important to know
which ones are having the problem.

Quick idea.... instead of changing file names for new revisions, when
you go from Rev. 1 to Rev. 2, make a folder called Rev1 and copy
everything into it. Then change the original files, w/o changing the
file names. Because all of the parts are located in the same folder, if
you go back and open up Rev1 it will have Rev1 of all the parts, and so
will Rev2. It saves allot of time renaming stuff and fixing references.

  4. hi, it's the new assembly that has the question marks, and the new assembly
that updates ok if I close and re-open it.

I understand that, and it's kind of weird that it is working that way,
however that is what seems necessary for it to realize the new file
name and the new feature name. Any time you change file names at each
revision you are asking for ALLOT of problems. Not to mention this
requires you to know everywhere that every part is used, so you can
make sure to get the new file (new revision) reference fixed.
It can be done, but it isn't fun, and isn't the "best" way to do it, in
    my opinion.
