Is there a command that can take architural desktop items in a 2002 drawing
and explode them correctly without changing the shape or rotating parts of
    the object?

    Have you tried aecobjexplode?

No I haven't. I dont have that, is it a lisp routine? It sounds like what
I need. How do I get it, and is it compatible with 2002?

    Thanks.

Actually, the file is from our customer who is using AD. Should they use
aecobjexplode on the drawing prior to sending it to us and saving it as
autocad? Can we use it outside of AD in Autocad?

    Thanks

It is an ADT command. Your customer could conveniently use
exporttoautocad command, which would save a copy.

You might also just want to obtain the ADT object enabler for
your version of AutoCAD (assuming that the ADT user is on
the same version). With the object enablers you would see
the AEC objects the same way your customer does. There
could be advantages to keeping the ADT objects if the object
enablers allow you to take advantage of the display system.

    Hope that helps.

Our problem is the blocks in their drawing. We change the color of their
drawing to print out light, and need to change colors within the drawing to
be bylayer. We xref their drawing into ours, and change the colors of the
xref layers as we need. If they are not to color bylayer, or are blocks,
then the colors and plotting is all wrong. If we explode them, the blocks
get messed up. Can they send it to us in a way so that it will work?

Does the exporttoautocad explode the blocks, and if so does so correctly?

We only need the architecturals for backgrounds only. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Do a google search on the propstobylayer command I posted
a couple of years ago. That should fix most of the problems in
    a flash.

Does that change colors within blocks to bylayer? I can change the whole
drawing at one time to color bylayer, but it doesnt work for AD objects,
    like walls and blocks.

  9. As Doug said, the best approach is for the person with ADT to run the
"export to AutoCAD" command. I run R2004 with the object enabler. The
object enabler is OK for viewing, but it does not work well for
exploding objects. I see the same type of problem with rotation of arcs
on some exploded objects. I think it's entities that have been mirrored
in ADT but I have not been able to verify. My experience with the
AECOBJECTEXPLODE command in ADT is that it does not do as good a job as
Export to AutoCAD in giving a clean drawing -- the wall intersections
show overlapped rectangles rather than being cleaned up, just like what
happens with the object enabler. I've also had a tremendously difficult
time getting the people at architectural offices to run either command.
They typically have never heard of either command, and since I don't
have ADT I can't give them step-by-step instructions. I my opinion this
is an area AutoDesk needs to work on. Exploding ADT objects should
provide a usable drawing, not one that needs hours of cleanup.
