Expanded Metal

  1. What would be the best way to represent expanded metal in a model and
drawing? It would be nice to (AutoCAD terms) hatch a surface and then
suppress the object whose surface was hatched. I believe to cut little
diamonds out of a piece of sheet metal would be overkill and burden the
system. I also believe applied textures do not show up on drawings. Also,
objects behind the expanded metal should be able to be seen, as in real
life. Drawing representation is more important than in rendered views.

  2. We have a part file with a few varieties of expanded metal as configs as a
solid blank with a corner "expanded." Then, depending on the size of the
part, a determination is made as to how much of the actual openings to
model. If you need to show the parts "through" the expanded metal, you can
cut away that portion that is covering what needs to be seen.
