In Mentor tools, there is a command called View Context. What it does
is when you are down in the hierarchy of a layout cell, you can have it
grey out all the cells around it that are not part of the current
context. This makes it easy to see what part of the entire layout
    belongs to that cell.

Is there a similar command in Cadence or a method of doing something
    equivalent.

I would appreciate any input that you might have.

    Thanks,

Try this when using the Virtuoso tool.

Go to Options->Display (usually the 'e' hotkey) and un-toggle (turn
off) the 'EIP Surround' button, then click OK or APPLY.

If you then redraw your screen or go back to top and then EIP, it
    should work.

This looks nice but instead of "greying out" the surrounding layout it
    disappears!

Yep, I knew about this option, but what I really wanted to see was a
greyed out background. I talked to Cadence and they call it "shadow"
mode. It is only available if you are using the CCAR tool which of
course is another license to purchase. I don't think we will be able
to justify purchasing a license just to get "shadow" mode so I will not
be able to do what I wanted here.

    Thanks for your help.
