  2. DWG is AutoCAD's native file type. No conversion required, unless you are
talking about converting versions of DWG.

Well i got one drawing in dwg format but it won't open in AutoCAD, don't
    know which version it is.
I guess DXF can be opened for sure in AutoCAD?

    Dakky -

It might be that the DWG file you are trying to open was saved by a more
recent version than your version of AutoCAD. Download the free DWG
TrueConvert from the Autodesk site to convert the file to a version you
can use. It might be a defective file, but this way you'll know.

Alas, there's no guarantee with DXF files, either. A lot of programs do
have a DXF export option, but all too often upon trying to open them you
get an error message like "Invalid data in line 352345." You can open
the DXF file in a text editor and go to line 352345 and delete the
offending entity and try again, but it's kind of a crap shoot.

    Good hunting.

  5. Another option is the DGWgateway toolbar.

  8. As others have said, AutoCAD works in DWG.

I'm guessing that you have a file that is newer than your version of
AutoCAD. AutoCAD 14 could not open AutoCAD 2000 files, even though
they are both "dwg". Similarly, AutoCAD 2000 cannot open AutoCAD 2002
    (or is it 2003?).

Autodesk has a product that will convert one version of a dwg to
another. Here is a link to the download
    http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=6703438&siteID=123112
    Snippet from their site:

    "DWG TrueViewâ„¢
Use this FREE* download to accurately view, plot, and publish
authentic DWG and DWF files. And now, DWG TrueView incorporates all
    the functionality of DWG TrueConvert.
This means you can translate any AutoCAD or AutoCAD-based drawing file
for compatibility with AutoCAD Release 14 through AutoCAD 2008."

    Hope this helps.

    The state_id pulldown menu is a no-op.

I tried to manually edit the html and run it locally and the
subsequent page it links to ain't there either.

Either they are discontinuing or upgrading.

I had downloaded the DWGTrueConvert a while back to my ISP but it was
too big and I had to delete it before moving it to my own
machine. THen when I tried to get it again, this problem appeared.

  11. Or get progeCAD which can open drawings from AutoCAD 2007 all the way
    back to version 2.5.

Well, sapra-sapra-surprise! some web surfing yielded a link
    past their malfunctioning pull-down-state-menu cerberus:
