I work in an FDA regulated industry and am wondering what is the common practice for updating facility drawings such as equipment, piping, HVAC, electrical, etc. Many of these drawings use the base architectural plans for the facility. The problem I have is that when the facility is modified we have to change many drawings for architectural only. We have toyed with the idea of using layouts and/or xref to consolidate the changes to one file. Can anyone tell me what they are doing?

I use XREF for background architectural files, and the only time I will bind them is if the customer specifically requests that I do. If the bldg. changes, you only need to update the background once, and it will be reflected in all of your other utility files.
