Dims: 3d objects: multi view ports: single plot

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by Scott C. Parker, Feb 2, 2004.

  1. Greetings.
I'm new to the list and I've searched past posts for this answer with no
    luck.
I design for the stage in 3d and I'd like to plot out multiple view
construction drawings for the crew to work off of. Let's say 4 view
ports. 1) groundplan view. 2) right side. 3) front. 4) ISO view.
When I dim in model space, you see all the dims running in the various
    directions in each view port.
I could dim in paper space, but then when I change something on the set,
I have to make so many changes in paper space to the dims.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Scott

    Try this..........

Make a separate layer for the dims in each viewport.
    I use dim-top, dim-front, dim-left......etc.....
    Lock all your view ports.
Dim the model through each viewport on the relevant layer.
Set the other dim layers to frozen in current viewport.

If you use SOLDRAW to make your views, it does much the same for you.

What version of AutoCAD? If it's 2002 or later, you can dimension model
space objects in paper space, and the dimensions will fix themselves if you
then change the model space geometry. DIMASSOC must be 2 for this.

For us, DIMASSOC=2 is much too unstable in R2002. Simple mods to the model result in lost associativity and dimensional errors. We modify DIMLFAC as necessary.

Yes, it also has errors with soldraw viewports and updating.

hmm...i am trying this but doesn't work for me...i am using 2004...

I have my 3d cube in MS and then switch to PS and start dimensioning.

I then (floating space) change the size of the 3d cube but the dimensions
    don't change???

maybe I am missing something here.....DIMASSOC is 2

    Thanks for the help.

That's strange Bill. I do the same thing -- make a 3D shape in the model
tab, switch to a layout, check that DIMASSOC is 2, and dimension the object
inside the viewport in paper space. Then I switch to MS in the layout, and
scale the shape. The dimension changes for me.

I can't think of any other variables...

  9. Thanks all for your suggestions. I did the 4 view and then lock the
layers in each view port to off as needed.
    have a great day.

    Hi Dave

It works now...not sure what happened...maybe ACAD needed a
    burb...or..umm....I do.....

    Thanks
