dimensions in notes

When a dimension is used in a note using &dxxx the dimension
disappears, and returns when the note is deleted, but when this is used
as the dimension text in dimension properties for a case where the depth
of a hole needs to be included because the view this dim is on is not
clear, this dim remains. Obviously it can be erased manually, but is
there a way to automatically remove dimensions used elsewhere?
    thanks

Sorry, I can't be much help, but you're right, adding &d76 (for the depth) to the diameter note text doesn't remove the dimension from an existing view in the drawing. I never tried that before so I never noticed it, probably because I use, as much as possible, the Standard Hole note callout. Or I show sections to show hole depth, where necessary, such as a plain hole or simple cut, that doesn't carry a note callout with it. It doesn't seem unreasonable that it should do what you're expecting. I just have no idea why it doesn't.

I've never got on with standard holes and prefer to use extrusions and
    revolves to create the holes.

BTW, on a related subject, I don't like the way extrude in the tree does
not distinguish between adding and removing material, again this could
be renamed manually but it would be useful for this difference to be
    somehow marked. Any ideas?

Curiously, &dxx cannot be put into an added dimension, just appears as
text without effect on the parameter.

They do take some getting used to. But, if you gave up on them soon after they were introduced 6-7 revs ago, they might be worth a revisit. And if you can get the note format set up to your liking. And if you can figure out how to attach a Pro/e feature control frame to it, etc.

The weirdest thing about the absence of any distinction is that this marks a step backwards: previous revs named features as Cut or Protrusion. Even if the icon were a different, it'd help, but I also don't see any way in config.pro or config.win to control either feature naming or icon identification. Can you put in an "enhancement request" to get back stuff we lost?

I'm in Wildfire 2, and how I get around the lack of distinction
between Cuts and Extrudes is I just rename the tree item. I like to
rename all my tree items anyway, it makes it much easier to find the
particular edit I'm after ("SLOT_FOR_DINGUS" is much clearer than
"Extrude16"). Just a slow double-click on the tree-item's name til it
highlights, then type in the new name.

I do like the standard holes (usually) for fastener-holes, i.e. a thru
counterbored hole for a 4-40 socket head cap screw, etc. We use a lot
of such fasteners in the parts I design. For anything other than a
hole for a standard fastener, I just use Extrude or maybe Revolve for
    a complicated shape.

I routinely use '&dXXXX' in the "Text Properties" of dimensions to
call out counterbore depths, diameters, etc in the same dimension
(along with the appropriate Symbols). I never noticed a way to get the
other dimensions I use to disappear after this, I just 'Erase' them
    manually.
