After a struggle and playing around with dimensioning options, I discovered
how to dimension in inches instead of feet and inches:

On the Primary Units tab of the Dimension Style Manager, select "Fractional"
for Unit Format. In the Suffix box, insert ". This converts any feet and
inches measurements to inches and fractions of inches.

You can also use alternate units to display in both foot-inch and inches.

Looks like all the previous posts from you have disappeared.

Did you ever see the ones to you from this morning? Just wondering if any
of those got you onto the right track.

Thanks for providing the way you found to do it. Others can benefit from
    your experience.

Thanks for your input. I now have a separat Dimension Style for the times I want just inches. Particularly on Cabinet dimensions, when it get tight, I often want it to read " 12" " instead of " 1'-0" " or " 18" " instead of " 1'-6" ". Thanks to you, I now have an alternate style that leaves the dimension associative. Again thanks -KLYPH

I, too, use this for kitchen dimensioning--a separate Dimension Style is a
great idea. Thanks! Maybe AutoDesk will consider labeling the
    "Fractional" options "Inches only."

i do mechanical, but use different dimesion styles, such as decimal2, decimal3, and alternate to display metric. can string dims, change style, then update only those i want in that format.

the reason why it's labeled "Fractional" and not "Inches" is because the output is a fraction of a unit, not a fraction of an inch. for example, if you were working in metric and wanted dimensions shown in fractions of a meter, you would use "Fractional" and add "m" as a suffix.

why would you show a "fraction" of a "meter"?
i got tape measurers that have imperial on one side and metric and the other, but the imperial side is the only one with fractions.

Fractions of a metre. What a concept!! :)

it was just an example, i'm not saying i would do it, just saying that changing "Fractional" to say "Inches Only" would limit acad's flexibility. the whole world doesn't revolve around imperial units, sometimes people don't realize that americans aren't the only people using acad (and not the only people autodesk is thinking of when they put out their products).

i deal with both, american company owned by the japenese, and we buy alot of equipment from germany, so i use both.
in mechanical enviroment, meters arent used, just mm.
the subject thread really started on a simple disscussion on displaying inches, which is easy to do, especially with a little peeksy at the help menu. i have lots of preset dim styles, have forever, thought it was basic tool, one of the first things i was tought!

The help menu was the first thing I looked at to answer the question, but I
did not find the answer. Obviously, I did not look at the right content.
Please advise me where the answer to the inches only question is located in
    Help. Thank you.

It was not obvious or intuitive that "Fractional" would mean inches only
....but then I have no suggestions on any other wording. I am just glad I
discovered the setting that would result in the dimension units I need. I
think the answer could be found in Help if query is made properly, but no
query came up with the help I needed.
