We use AutoCAD. Is there an easy way to convert the DGN files we
received to DWG files? The second question is, are the converted files
in 3D model or are they merely 2D images? Thanks.

It depends on which version of AutoCad you are using, if it is 2007,
then you can import DGN files straight in, any version before that and
you will have to translate the files.

Microstation has a batch convertor built in, if you don't have any
copies of Microstation, then you can use Bentley Redline to perform the
    translation.

The resulting files will be in 3D, assuming that the source files are
    also.

    I am using 2007. How?

I send the dgn files to our autocad vendor. He converted them to dwg
files. They were in 2D, practically of no use to us. We are going
back to the client, or the client's subcontractor, who claims they have
great difficulty saving the Microstation model to autocad model. But
they may supply the dgn files which has the 3D entities.

    We shall see.

No, and on top of that, no translation is perfect.

If you need DWG, then create a DWG.
If you need DGN, then create a DGN.

Going back and forth is just asking for problems.

If you insist, Microstation and AutoCAD MAP can read/write DWG. There
are other 3rd party tools out there.

We don't even use Microstation. I wouldn't be asking the question if
we do. So going back and forth is not an issue. We are staying in
Autocad, 2004 or 2007. And we are not asking for a perfect
translation. We just want the 3D model to revise and add. We'll take
care of the presentation (layouts) of it.

We often have to translate from DGN to DWG, we do have Micr*stati*n
seats and use the batch processor in that to create DWG files, your
client should be able to do that for you.

We don't have AutoCad 2007 rolled out yet, but I understand that there
is a translator in Beta form for free download. Check here:
