    Hi
The LA I work for took a contract for the county government - NOW he
tells me that they are sending the plans in Microstation format(DGN) AND
want the landscape plans submitted in the same. He tells me he is relying
on me to find a way to solve his problem (we only have AutoCAD, and that is
all I am trained on.) I know nothing about Microstation except my AutoCAD
    won't open it.

    Any suggestions ? (besides telling him he F_ _ _ _ D UP)

    Thanks

It might be an expensive option, but I am told Microstation can import and
export both DWG and DXF (as well as it's proprietary DGN).

Another expensive option would be to contract me to write a converter :)
Or, I would imagine there are plenty of software vendors already doing the
like (and most likely a lot cheaper). Google it, I think you will come up
    with some results.

    Good luck.

    A) How is a contract negotiated without an agreement on digital file format?

    B) Beware of DGN/DWG "converters", "importers", and "exporters". They will do it, but the differences in the file formats do not allow perfect (or even good, sometimes) translations.

    C) I have seen this problem first hand. Client specified DGN, but allowed work to be done in AutoCAD, then translated. Contractor ended up buying Microstation - as it proved cheaper in the long run to train on/use it than worry about messed up translated files.

    D) AutoCAD Map will import/export DGN. Microstation can open DWG. Again, it all comes back to the specifications of the contract. If it doesn't specify the program used to *create* the DGN, then maybe a translator will work for you.

    Good luck.

  5. get a copy of TurboCAD Pro.

will save/open files in .dwg or .dgn

    =======================

If you don't want to learn a new cad program, we can convert them for you.

Supply # of files, avg. file size, etc. and we can quote you a price.

Thanks for all the ideas - but I'm pretty sure buying MS and training is
out - I only work for the guy about 12 hrs a week and he won't want to spend
the money - I actually suggested that he try to find a consultant with MS to
draw the stuff for him and he didn't want to.
I believe he was thinking along the lines of a translator.

Does anyone have any experience using Hijack Pro to do this conversion? I
knew somebody who used to use it for raster conversions. I checked the web
site and it claims to do dgn to dwg - my question is, how well.

    Thanks again
