Can someone please point me in the right direction? I have about 4 cds worth
of microstation files that I need to convert to an AutoCAD format. Does any
one know of a dgn convert program? You know something like Autocad's batch
dwg converter but will allow me to convert to a different piece of software.

    Thanks.

MSTA used to offer a free trial version of MSTA that was fully functional,
it just timed out every 20 minutes. Check with Bentley to see if the offer
is still available. If so, you can "push" dwg's from dgn's, but you have to
take extreme care with the setup, if you want usable data in the dwg.

    Hi Mike,
If you have acces to AutoCAD Map it will import DGN files for you or you could get the originator to supply you with DWG versions direct from Microstation, the latest version saves and reads dwgs. I had a quick look once and it seemed to work fairly well.

anyone know if map will convert better, rather than using microstation to
    saveas .dwg ?

i'm waiting for the next microstation dwg to come in from a client, and was
wondering if i should tell them not to bother converting it.

I have yet to find a conversion tool that does not require, what is in my opinion, an unacceptable level of repair after conversion. None of them work well at all, with MSTA's built-in capability, one of the worst.

I believe one of the keys to getting an import to look good is editing the
mapimport.ini file. Luckily I haven't had to do this myself. We do have one
consultant who works in MSTA and exports to Acad. They seem to know what
they are doing as their drawings look good when we get them.

Oh, they usually "look" fine, it's the attribute/tag, layer/level names, dims/dimstring issues that cause problems for us.

We have found it more cost effective to use the tool that is required for the output format. If AutCAD, then AutoCAD, if MSTA then MTSA. We expect the same from our vendors, suppliers and sub-contractors.

Unfortunately our consultant has to go both ways. We're a County Hwy Dept.
We run Acad and want DWG files. However the project is State funded and the
State DOT wants DGN files. So they have to provide us with DWG & State with
DGN. They work with both programs but use MSTA on the State projects because
that is where the money is.

We used to maintain 1 seat of MSTA but budget restrictions made us drop the
upgrades on something we were using mainly for conversions.
