    Hi Group,

    What we usually do:
    I create a file called "topo-<projectnumber>.dgn", attach a
bunch of massive topograhic maps that are from another server.
This server is connected to ours through a busy (thus slow) wire.
We copy all topo files to this one file and detach the large
files again, to save on bandwith. We now use the freshly
created file on our local server as a reference for our project.
    So far so good.

    What really happened:
A guy in our office create a large "seweroverview.dgn" with
not the project named topographic file, but with the all
files from the slow connection. Those were a lot of files.
Once this file with attachments was created it got unbelievably
slow. Our connection got slower too somehow.

    My problem (besides noisy neighbours):
I have a file that containes several reference files
(once again, this one's created by some other guy, so there's
no blaming me, right). Once this file with attachments was
created it got unbelievably slow. (I didn't build that
connection, so there's no blaming me, right).
Now I try to open this file and due to this slow connection
it takes ages to open such files.
For this certain file it is even impossible to open (I have
    to abort after 30 minutes).
I can attach the file to another file, works just fine.
But with nest depth set to 1... it's stuck.
This problem has occured several times before.

    What I don't want:
    -Buy expensive 3rd party software.
-Get spammed with ads about how a certain 3rd party can
solve the problem for me in exchange for -again- lotta $$$.
-Create another file and copy contents from the
    "seweroverview.dgn"
-fire the guys who keep on making the same mistake.
-Buy T1 for very many money.

    What I do want:
Can anybody tell me of a way to attach all reference files
from a file using Microstation J or EdG, without having to
open this certain file in Microstation. I'm willing to try
EdG and if I screw this up, well I will be the one to blame.
    But thats fine with me.
Then I will remove all evidence that I even tried.

it must have failed for other reasons.

  2. Here is what I do

I would deliberately remove the path to your reference files (if you have
saved full path, this could be a problem)
still you could disconnect from the server temporarily.

You should then be able to open up you file- all your refs are in red.

Note the names of you files, create new, empty one on a local drive

You open up file A, all your refs are now black (but empty)

Ref File A into File B with nest depth 1

Do what you have to do

    Reconnect to server

    Open File B

Go to lunch (threatening the user who caused you the problem in the first
place- I find threatening to stab people with a blunt screwdriver is a good
one - thats got to hurt)

I gather you simply want to manipulate your refs without actually having to
    see them?

One of my first holidays abroad was in Estoril, near Lisbon, in Portugal in
1977. I can still recall the best seafood meal I've had to this day in a
restaurant called o'Batel in a fishing village called Cascais. Mmmm!!

Cascais nowadays is a village overrun by young people who enjoy
discos, bars and other nightlife. A place to stay is hard to find in
the season, well that's what Lonely Planet says. Reason for me and my
girl to skip this town and go for the much more quite Ericeira. Found
a room within one hour in Ericeira. Lots of nice fish restaurants. I
expect this place will be a walhalla to dancing youngsters within 25
    years too.

In Ericeira we got sunburned so badly, we had to stay in bed and lay
on our stomachs for two nights and two days.

Prices for food are very good in Porugal. 7.50 Euros for salmon with
fries. As in the Netherlands I would have to pay 18.50 Euros for a
    smaller piece.

    Ah,
    Those good old days.
When ships were made of wood and men of steal.

And I used to chase my breakfast with a spear.

Funny you remember the exact year and the name
    of the restaurant.
Ever thought of returning to Cascais?
    Or other spots in Portugal?
I'm not trying to sell a holiday here btw.
