Design Journal and Open Office

I have removed MS Office and replaced it with Open Office.

Now when I try to open a Design Journal, it tells me that I need Microsoft
    Word to open the document.

Is there a way round this to open the document using Open Office?

The Navigator in Open Office Writer is just a pleasure to use. The
Open Office community is also very helpful. Since SolidWorks Corp is
no longer going to be seen as the mid-priced technology leader and
Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology is, perhaps it should be a
priority to support Open Office in SolidWorks 2009.

SolidWorks 2009 will be known as the most boring release of SolidWorks
ever. Siemens has the tools in Solid Edge to have a field day and
convert many SolidWorks users to Solid Edge because SolidWorks Corp
has and is asleep at the wheel.

    Hi Tom,

DOC files are assocated with Open Office, and if I double clik on one, Open
    Ofice opens it.

After some further searching, though I couldn't find much, It appears the
Design Journal.doc file is embedded in the part file, so needs the MS Office
    integration links to open it.

You're correct. As per usual Tom Brewer is clueless on SolidWorks and
continues to make mistake after mistake after mistake. Suggest you
request SolidWorks Corp. starts supporting Open Office in SolidWorks
2009... it's the least they can do now that it's obvious SolidWorks
2009 is going to be nothing special. No one I know of has upgraded to
SolidWorks 2008... for damn good reason. I doubt they will upgrade to
SolidWorks 2009 either. They may very well upgrade to Solid Edge with
    Synchronous Technology.

IOW You have no clues what was asked about.
Nor is it any of SW's business to "support" banquercadcam
    OR babbleonjon.
    IOW No clues.
    BS.
BTW, Why are YOU trying to promote SE over UG?
SE is a CAD program & UG is a CAD/CAM program as well
at the "flagship product" for which the new stuff was developed
    and more fully implemented.
And YOU claim to do what, exactly? Read ads? Remain
    utterly clueless?

I'd recheck all the options that can be set at time of SW
install and also look for environment variables that are being set.

I'd also check for options/flags for calling Open Office -- it may have
some (I don't know) so that it does not have to depend on file type
associations & so forth to decide which bits of Open Office to use.

What happens if you rename MS Word's executable to something
else (briefly just for a test) & then make a link from it's old name to
the Open Office executable? Just curious .....

    Ignorant:

“Jon, I never forgot any of your postings about SDRC I made the wrong
decision in spite of what you said. There have been a number of times
that my Wife has told me to be careful in dealing with someone and
after words says "I told you so". She earned the right to say it as
well as you have earned the right to say I TOLD YOU SO. I made a
decision that went against my better judgment and as usual it turned
    out poorly.” .... Tom Brewer

    Ignorant:

“I do not purchase programs unless I know before hand that they are
what I want and/ or need.”... Tom Brewer who can’t follow his own
    advice. See above.

    Ignorant:

Tom Brewer thinking he and his pals like Joe788 can play their Usenet
staking games, lie on a repeated basis and suffer no consequences for
    doing so.

    Ignorant:

“I have shot myself in the foot, not an easy thing to do when it is
in your mouth and your head is in your ass.”… Tom Brewer admitting
    what he’s often like.

    Ignorant:

Someone who has a proven track record of not being able to deal with
or accept the kind of change that occurs in the cadcam market... now
that's ignorant or should we say that's Tom Brewer.

    Ignorant:

Someone who doesn't live in San Diego yet insists there is no shortage
of CNC machinists here... now that's ignorant or should we say that's
    Tom Brewer.

    Ignorant:

Someone who criticizes someone on SolidWorks but has never helped
anyone with specific SolidWorks answers. Someone who is not able to
answer any questions that “Vinny” had on master modeling or skeletal
modeling. Someone who has never posted any models they have done...
now that's ignorant or should we say that's Tom Brewer.

    Ignorant:

Tom Brewer's failure to understand who Matt Lombard really is.

    Ignorant:

Tom Brewer’s unable to comprehend what’s on the cover of the
    SolidWorks Bible:

    "Whether you're a new, intermediate, ...."

    Ignorant:

Someone who can’t understand more than a simple “I love it!” or “I
hate it!” type of comment ... now that's ignorant or should we say
    that's Tom Brewer.

    Ignorant:

Tom Brewer implies that because you acknowledge that the $25
SolidWorks course covers subjects / topics that the $650 SolidWorks
course didn't that you're now somehow an idiot and got screwed when
you decided to purchase the $650 SolidWorks course.

    Tom Brewer Writing About SmartCAM:

“I ended up paying a consultant $40.00 per hour for two weeks.”

“FYI, when I said "Solid modeling" in reference to SmartCam it was
tongue in cheek. What you could not see is that when I was typing that
I was laughing to myself. Anyone that uses SmartCam and Solid
Modeling in the same sentence cannot be taken seriously.”

Recently Tom Brewer said SmartCAM had no user interface problems and
yet the record shows Tom Brewer thinks SmartCAM does indeed have user
    interface problems:

“The only real problem that I run into is that the screen can get
cluttered and it becomes difficult to pick and choose elements in Free
Form. I just use the utility masking feature to hide what is in the
way, that cures the problem but it does add work (I tried the snap
filtering and snap options but for me it was not the best way), I
have seen other packages that handle picking and choosing in better.”

    Conclusion:

Tom Brewer thinks he’s a SolidWorks expert. A SolidWorks expert is
someone who knows more and more about less and less until he knows
    absolutely everything about nothing.

SW Has to be extracting the .doc file from it's database &
calling another program to deal with it. It passes the file,
probably as a hidden temp file on disk, to the invoked program
in it's call to it but where the called program is in the file system
could be anywhere so it's using some environment variables
($PATH is one such) and I'd guess that the called program is
set by one too. An $EDITOR variable defined when SW was
    installed?
A search of the SW installation for the name of the MS Word
executable (without the .exe I'd suspect) might find where.

Still won't work will it, Greyhound? It won't work because SolidWorks
Corp. doesn't want it to work and wants to force SolidWorks users to
use MS Word and MS Excel.

    Sucks doesn't it?

I firstly re-installed Word, and it opens the Design Jounal as expected.

Renamimg WINWORD.EXE, and replacing it with a shortcut of the same name that
points to OOo writer, starts the MS Office installer and if I cancel that,
    it still opens MS Word.

If Tom Brewer or Cliff Huprich had clue one they would have told you
that. The FACT is that Tom Brewer is no SolidWorks expert and makes
mistake after mistake after mistake when it comes to CADCAM as he did
once again here. Cliff Huprich has never used SolidWorks.

You're not going to get this to work because SolidWorks Corp. wants
