I used to be a regular subscriber to this group but haven't visited for
    several years.

One of the best contributers was one Dennis Shinn.

I've tried to contact him - for old time's sake - to no avail.

We used to have some wonderful "Off Topic" chats. His loves were his
Jeep, travel, single malt scotch and fine cigars.

    Does anyone have any info?

To any of the "old timers" still participating in this group who may
remember me, "Thanks for for the memories". It was like being part of a
    family.

Yoder, Ian, Marshall, Randy, Cam et al. And who can forget the
    irascible Tony Tanzilla.
(Only kidding Tony - your books taught me a lot)

    Mike Warner.

Dennis "retired", moved to a home in the country and has now taken up
woodworking for fun and enjoyment. I haven't corresponded with him for a
year or so but at last contact he was alive and well :)

    HiHo;
I sent a email to Dennis at his old email address.
Asked him to contact you. You bring back lots
of memories. I first met Dennis while he was
the president of the Seattle AutoCad group.
Later today, it's 08:00hrs here, I'll call him at
his old phone number. Nice to see another
    oldtimer is still active.

  5. Wow. There's a blast from the past. Dennis was an *awfully* smart, funny and
helpful guy. Sad, but I'd forgotten that I'd forgotten about him. None of
the others mentioned frequent the group anymore, which has dried up over the
    years.

I do also remember you, Mike. Where have you been? You in TO?

    They still make jeeps.

    Travel is nice.

Alcohol and tobacco will kill you, even "fine" ones.

  7. I too also remember Dennis. He helped me enormously through some Acad
difficulties. I just recently have returned since now I have had to
use cad once more. The first person's name I looked for was Dennis. I
had forgotten his last name. I'm glad to hear that he is enjoying life
    whatever his pursuits may be.

Ooh, clever - but there again:

People still get killed in or by Jeeps.

Some people get killed when they travel - now that's not nice.

Believe or not but some people who have never touched alcohol or
tobacco have been known to die.

The difference between you, Sunshine, and Dennis is that he is
remembered for something more than smart-assed postings.

As he would say, "Get back into your cage and come out when you've got
    something useful to contribute".

heh! welcome back Mike :) I also smoke good cigars and drink single malt
Islay scotch. My brother died of cancer at 39...never smoked or drank in
his life. I'm still here at 57 and going strong ;)

Without ostriches like you two, the alcohol and tobacco industries
wouldn't have had the guilt and the excess cash to promote sports the
way they have over the years, so I guess that's not such a bad thing!

whatareya, some kind of pinko Democrat? You probably think that
McDonalds is a bad place for selling fat laden food to fat people too. I
take responsibility for what I do in my life. If everyone else did we
    wouldn't be having this conversation...

  12. You'd be surprised how much is the same underneath the 'improvements', most
of which are quite superficial, IMHO.

We all stand on the shoulders of those before us, and I'm thankful for those
who've shared with me. I still try to pass on what I know to anyone who
looks like they're trying despite being way less than "current".

Hope you're staying dry out there. Can you see Mt. Baker from where you are?

    Hey, Dennis,

Your life sounds a bit like mine, right down to R14 being everything I need
in retirement. Sounds like we live just across the water from each other, as
I'm on Whidbey Island. The difference is that I've been "retired" since long
    before I stopped actually "working."

Unfortunately, my current take on these groups (including the
Autodesk-sponsored ones) is that they have become little more than
substitutes for the AutoCAD HELP system. Same tired old questions day in and
day out, most of which could be answered more easily by simply pressing the
    F1 key.

I still monitor them occasionally, though, and jump in once in a while with
my nickel's worth, and even find a gem of new information sometimes.

    Have fun,
    Paul Turvill

P.S. Haven't seen Tony T here recently, but he still pops in with a few
words on the Autodesk groups now and then. He's mellowed a great deal since
    the old days.

We're 10 miles south of Deception pass, about 7 miles north of Coupeville
(outside of Oak Harbor, on the west side, overlooking the Strait of Juan de
    Fuca).

Yeh, I think we (my architect wife and me) were sorta pioneers in the
"one-drawing-per project" arena. Most of the A&E firms on the Island used
our approach until Adesk finally came up with "layouts". I still prefer our
old tried-and-true LISP-based methods over the Adesk
click-drop-click-drop...(ad nauseum) stuff, but then I'm a bit prejudiced
and have never worked "on the clock."

  15. Dennis,
Sounds like you might be near the Scagit River Valley. I spent some
time out there in 1977. Mom and Pop cedar shake mills and local bars.
Towns were Concrete, Mount Vernon and a couple of others I can't
    remember.

    Skagit (with a "k").

Burlington, Sedro Woolley, Conway, Anacortes ... all great little towns.
Although Mt. Vernon suffers greatly from overgrowthitis and infrastructure
    deficiency.

Hey... great to hear you're alive and well Dennis and enjoying retirement.
Having built the odd timber boat in my time, I've found working with wood is
    good for your soul.

You never did sign off out'a here and some of us that you helped over the
years never got to buy you an old malt.

That offer stands if you ever make it down to little ol' NZ.

Trust Mike Warner to get an old timers party together with no grog! Kinda
made my weekend finding out some lost friends were still out there.

    Thanks Mike.

    Cheers,

    Cam Jackson

... who still fires up his Acad 2000 from time to time, but has forgotten
    most of the commands.

....mind you, I've never really got my head around it.

  18. I know a bunch of people who haven't found a compelling reason to ditch r14
and still make money using it.

I could use that viewsort routine by the way....nudge nudge wink wink...
