Please bear with me, I am green.
    Assembly drawing document with parts.
I want to create an excel linked bom that shows on the assy drawing
doc. I went into each part and put in catagories
    NAME ...............DIAL
    DESCRIPTION... INDEX DIAL
    NUMBER...........5002

When I go to the assy. drawing doc., the and double click on the excel
bom, I get catagories I did not even put in
    i.e.
    PART NO.
    QTY
    ITEM
The only column or group that refected what I did was DESCRIPTION.

After I made these custom changes in the part file, I did save, I went
to the assy doc and did a control Q to update.
I have LINK TO BOM CHECKED.
HELP, ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE HECK I AM DOING WRONG? I AM GETTING
    FRUSTRATED. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

PART NO, QTY & ITEM MUST be in the excel BOM template. They can be
hidden if you don't need them in the BOM. What version of SW are you using.
If you have 2005-2007 I would use the SW BOM as it is easier to set up
    and use.

I am running SW 2005. In my excel bom I have for example a PART NO.
catagory. I opened a part file and went into properties and into
custom and created a property name PART NO, and then in the value/text
expression I put in 555555 . I clicked OK. The I went into drawing
assembly document and updated Control Q, in the excel bom, listed
under PART NO, were the names of the various parts in the assembly.
NOT the number 555555 that I expected to see under PART NO catagory
    and for that part.
    What am I doing wrong?

Im going from memory here. In your Excel bom template you have to have a
column for each of the properties in the BOM. These columns should also
be in the custom property of the part.
In the first cell of each column you have to have a name that matches
that custom property. In Excel pick the first cell then choose INSERT >
NAME > DEFINE and type in the name. Keep in mind that the cells that are
predefined have to be in the BOM somewhere. If you need to move them do
a cut/paste and NOT copy as the name will stay with that column. This
should be all you need. Also remember that the last column MUST BE the
    END column.
See if there is anything more in the help file as I don't have 2005 on
    anything.

I got it, my problem was in the define, i.e. A1= ITEM
etc. .............Why does the last column have to be END? Thanks
    for the help!

It's just one of the requirements of this type of BOM.
