I have an HP Deskjet 1220C printer running on Windows XP. The printer works in every other way except when trying to make .plt files. When I try to create a .plt file Autocad closes completey without asking to save the drawing or anything. Any suggestions? Thanks

Install, or change the printer, onto the port FILE in Windows.
You will get a message box or Windows when printing.
The files will NOT be HPGL/2 Plot files, you know..

Yes, I know. I want to make plt files so I can do a batch convertion to pdf
with View Companion. I want to email the pdf's to a co-worker who does not
have acad. I know I can make pdf's through acad and acrobat distiller but I
have muliple drawings to send her and I thought the batch conversion would
be faster. I don't know why acad crashes when I try to make the plt files
using the pc3 file I have set up for my 1220c.

The main question is "Why can't I create a plt file using the HP 1220C?" Is
the HP 1220C incapable of creating plt files? I guess a should clarify that
I am running Autocad LT if that makes adifferance

  5. Afaik this printer works with a PCL dialect (PCL 3), not HPGL/2; you can not
convert PCL to PDF with Viewcompanion. If you want to ... "take this long
way" - as Dean calls it - you could better load and use one of AutoCAD's own
HDI HPGL/2 drivers (for instance one for a DesignJet). Configure the driver
to plot to file or check the plot to file check box.

A better starting point for PDF would be PostScript as that is the basis for
almost all PDF creators. You can get excellent PDF's when you load AutoCAD's
(E)PS driver and use GhostScript to convert to PDF; my GoBatchGS frontend
for GhostScript (www.output.tmfweb.nl) may be helpful here. Other options
have been given by other posters.
