copying from files referenced to themselves?

Is there a way, when copying an element from a file that is referenced to
itself and rotated, to copy to the position identified in the current file
rather than the corosponding position in the attached file.

eg. You are drawing elevations of a building.
You have the floor plans referenced in.
You draw each elevation in its natural relation to the attached plan, ie
rotated in relation to each other elevation.
You then attach the current file to itself and rotate it so that one
elevation in the self attached file aligns horizontally with an elevation in
    the master file.
You then copy an element from the referenced elevation to a position in
the current elevation and the copied element gos to the wrong position.
Surely the copy should take account of the attached files transform and
copy to the position that the draftsperson would naturally expect. I note
that copying using fences does the "right" thing in this respect but the
    copy element tool doesn't.

Is there a simple way around this?

Not that I know of Dave though this complaint comes up on a semi regular basis. Bentley either don't have the time to fix it, don't care or actually think the current behaviour is a good idea. Either way, we are just going to have to avoid self referencing or learn to work around the current limitation.

  3. Export to 2d (of course it assumes you are using 3d)
or vice versa. I just name the file 2d and put it in an unusual place.

That way you do not come out of your design file and you never mistake the
    file for
anything else. You don't get automatic updates, and you cannot re-export the
    file
if it is referenced into your drawing (but you could swap locations and
    alternate
    between different exports)

    Nasty but it works.

But hey, isn't it wild when you copy a self referenced file through- Oh, and
    you can delete
elements from a reference file if it is the same as the live one.
