I would like to make an exact copy of an assembly and all parts in the
assembly, with no reference to the original assemble.

I have tried save as copy, and save references, but everytime I do
somehow it gets linked back to the original assebly.

I am trying to use the same assebly twice in a master assebly with no
tie betwen the two assemblies. I need to do this without using
    configurations.

    TIA
    Troy

    Start up SolidWorks Explorer
Open up the assembly you want to copy
Right click on the Top Level in the tree and select copy
Rename the files, and select the folder you want the files in
And presto you will have an exact copy!

I don't think you can copy all your files to different folders, using
save references, and then insert each version into a new assy file. It
will fail because the filenames are the same!
