Copy Settings Wizard?

What does this do?

In the 3 or 4 times I've used it it didn't change the File Locations
(under System Options), it didn't set the toolbox settings, it didn't
seem to do anything.

Maybe I'm expecting too much, maybe I'm doing it wrong...

I dunno.

 

One thing I noticed when going from SW2006 to SW2007 was that all of
the paths in the sldreg file that the copysettingswizard created
pointed to the old Solidworks 2006 registry entries. (I was installing
2007 at the time and after saving my settings I did a complete
uninstall and purged the system registry of all solidworks). I then
installed SW2007 so naturally all Registry entries had a "2007" in
them. At this point I ran the wizard and Restored my settings and
like you said it did not work. I used REGEDIT and looked at my
registry and found that it did restore my settings exactly as it
captured them... with "2006" so now I had two sets in the registry one
set had "2006" (with my desired settings) and one set with "2007" with
all the new default settings.

for example:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2006\Dimensions]
"Arrow Height"="0.0018"
etc...

So the copysettings wizard is a very unsophisticated tool. All it
does is capture the Solidworks info from your computers Registry File
and the restores the captured info back to the registry. So when it
did not work for me I used Wordpad and opened the sldreg text file an
did noticed the 2006 --- 2007 confilct so I did a Find and Replace
and changed FROM Solidworks 2006 TO Solidworks 2007).

Then I Restored the Settings with the wizard and this seemed to work.

Also, I just now used the wizard and captured my settings. I then
checked (with WordPAd) to see if it captured the File Location
Settings and found them here;

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2007\ExtReferences]

You didn't mention if you were going from one major release to another
so I hope this info is some help to you.

Good info to put out. I always install a version in its own folder such as
SolidWorks2007 and so have seen the same thing. For each new version, I
like to load it on a clean machine, go through the options to set what I
want, then save out the settings to our "standard" file. That way I get a
clean reg file, I get the opportunity to peruse the options to familiarize
myself with the new stuff, and I make sure that everything is set the way I
want.

Mine was a 'clean' install too.

Uninstalled 2006, deleted remaining folders, cleaned out the registry,
defragged, installed 2007, applied SP's, ran Copy Settings Wizard,
(fixed everything I could think of), ran conversion wizard... then spent
the better part of two days doing the Conversion Wizard of 14000 files,
then fixed all the other stuff that should be a no-brainer for SW.

I'll take a closer look at the Pats Fans method for future use.

I guess what I am trying to say is the new, clean install is looking
at the registry and finds the new 2007 entries (as it should).
However my CopySettings Wizard recorded a snapshot of my settings from
the Registry when I was running 2006. So after Restoring my file
(which has "2006" in the "path" so to speak, the new installation
searched the Registry only for " Solidworks 2007" and ignored all of
the Restored "Solidworks 2006" section. At this point the Registry has
a "2006" section and a "2007" but Soldworks itself is only looking at
"2007" section.

To resolve this I manually edited the file.

IMO - The wizard should have asked me to enter the version in a simple
field where I could choose "2007" and then the wizard should be smart
enough to do the search and replace part. (which would not be
necessary if going from SP to SP).

wc - did you run CopySettingsWizard on "2006" to save your settings
before doing all of this?
