Copy/paste problem in acad 2000

Frequently I have a problem with trying to copy and paste entities
within AutoCAD 2000. When trying to copy items between drawings (or
even within the same drawing), nothing gets copied to the clipboard if I
try to copy too many items at once. I'm not talking about thousands of
items, sometimes only a dozen fairly simple blocks.

If I try to copy too many, it doesn't even clear the clipboard...pasting
will give me whatever I last successfully copied.

By machine is 2GHz with 512M ram, running W2000 Pro SP1. Memory use not
even 50% when this is going on, so it's not likely a need for more.
I've patched with SP1 and 2. Rebooting doesn't help either

Also, when this happens, AutoCAD doesn't quit properly. I have to go
into the task manager and kill the process. This doesn't happen if I
open the program and close it, only when I run into the clipboard
problem.

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? I've tried workarounds,
but nothing really works because of the type of drawings and activities
I'm doing.
