Go for what u can afford and don't worry at all about name brand name stuff,
u can save so much money if u just surf for a bit. Just make sure u get a
good monitor, CRT or TFT its really down to persoanl preference but a big
screen with high res can be a life saver. If ur not doing much demanding 3d
work then pcs released 3 or 4 years ago are absolutly fine for autocad, if u
are creating alot of large 3d drawings then definately get a new pc but I
shouldn't think u would have to spend more than about ?400 plus what ever u
spend on ur monitor, and as ur from US you should get it for even cheaper.

    Min configuration:

    2.6 Pentium 4
512 Meg of ram more for 3D modeling
    64 meg Video Card min
    17" Min monitor

I have 20 years experience using cad software

I just saw a nice setup @ office depot for 399.00 that would make great
little cad system. P4 256 meg or ram "UPGRADE MEMORY TO 1 GIG"

To move up to a big boy rig you will spend $500.00 min just for a video
    card.
