I created two documents with three identical benchmark points on
each. I am currently trying to combine the two documents into one,
but I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to do it.

  2. Can't you just insert one into the other and position the inserted one
on top of the other using one of the benchmarks as the "origin"? Then
you would explode the inserted document and all would be well with the
world. (I'm assuming I've interpreted what you've described
properly.) After that, you would purge the inserted drawing.
