dont know if this will work.........

can you do a SAVEAS on your original drawing, thus retaining xrefs complete
    with layer settings, etc.
Then copy/paste your drawing specific information into it (I'm assuming it
    already exists).

Contrary to opinion, you *can* copy and paste X-ref's between drawings, but
as Gordon pointed out, they lose their status as an X-ref when pasted into a
different drawing. Remember that Copyclip and Pasteclip is just a quicker
was for performing a Wblock and Insert. (You can examine the "copied"
drawing in your %temp% directory - the Xref is still there). Note that you
would get the same results if you tried Wblock / Insert.

One alternative would be to drag/drop the x-refs from DesignCenter

I tried to copy/paste, from model space, a set of details that are xrefs.
When I pasted they only came up with the name of the xref file (not even the
path). Is there a quick way to do this? Probably pretty simple, but I am not
aware of how to perform this operation to save the time of having to insert
each detail as an xref individually. (It would not even let me go into
'xref' command and attach the drawings, they weren't listed.)

Acopy of an Xref results in a block. There is an ExpressTool that allows you
to turn that block back into an Xref pretty easy, but the layer settings
will revert to what the base file shows, rather than the settings on the
    Xref you copied.
