Block name length limits?

Is there a length limit for block names in DXF files? I am using AutoCAD
2000 and writing r12 flavor DXF files. It appears that the name of my blocks
are truncated down to 26 characters. I also dumped a 2000 flavor DXF, same
    thing.

    Thanks

Here is some info I hunted down in the 2002 help file. I've never
used a 255 character block name. However, I recall running into
instances where I got an error message saying a block name was too
long or a block name that got truncated when it should't have. But,
in general I've been running into some random problems that aren't
common...(perhaps there is something in my system which isn't really
    trackable.)

    -------------
    block

    Name
Names the block. The name can have up to 255 characters and can
include letters, numbers, blank spaces, and any special character not
used by Microsoft® Windows® and AutoCAD for other purposes, if the
system variable EXTNAMES is set to 1.
    -------------
    EXTNAMES
    Saved in: Drawing
    Initial value: 1
Sets the parameters for named object names (such as linetypes and
    layers) stored in definition tables.

0 Uses Release 14 parameters, which limit names to 31 characters in
length. Names can include the letters A to Z, the numerals 0 to 9, and
the special characters, dollar sign ($), underscore (_), and hyphen
    (-).

1 Uses AutoCAD 2000 (and later releases) parameters. Names can be up
to 255 characters in length, and can include the letters A to Z, the
numerals 0 to 9, spaces, and any special characters not used by
Microsoft® Windows® and AutoCAD for other purposes.

I read that info as well. Within autocad the long name is present. The
problem appears when I generate a DXF file. That is where the block
    name is truncated.

I seem to remember that the limit was 32 or 31 characters with R12...
