    I was wondering if there is a better group like this one for
    SolidWorks where we can filter out the SPAM and other content and just
    stay focused on CAD & SolidWorks.

    not that hard to filter.

    It can not be filtered because it is an open public newsgroup, so
    repeat offenders or SPAM can not be blocked. If you know how then
    please inform us on how to block.

    There is a very active and helpful SW group at <http://www.eng-
    tips.com>. Trolls tend to think it over-moderated.

    That site is ok; but a little on the busy side. You know 10lbs of
    content in a 5lb site.

    yes, web forums are notoriously overburdened with graphics, self-serving
    plugs, advertisements, etc. if you only have web access then you are out of
    luck.

    using a newsreader (outlook express), message>block sender.
    see also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_file

    you can also try the solidworks forum.
    http://forum.solidworks.com/forum

    it does NOT require maintenance/subscription.

    The following are FACTS:

    The Eng-Tips SolidWorks forum doesn't allow student postings and
    thinks students of SolidWork should **** off and die.

    Solidmentor encourages students to post.

    The Eng-Tips SolidWorks forum is one of many, many forums on Eng-Tips.

    Solidmentor is exclusively devoted to SolidWorks.

    The owner of Eng-Tips is a large corporation.

    The owner of Solidmentor is a creative SolidWorks user who enjoys to
    helping and teaching.

    There are no advertisements on Solidmentor and I like the web board
    software that the owner uses.

    Jon,

    Why is it every time I read one of your posts I get the feeling that I
    am being sold something? Do you own stock in Solidmentor? Get $.50
    each time you mention it on a newsgroup? Jon I believe that this is
    why I have seen so many negative replies to your comments.

    Yes there are no advertisements, but the video previews are to large
    and it seems like the site is using every new tool out there.

    I mean come on:
    News
    Archive
    Topics Directory
    Blogs
    Podcasts
    SolidWiki
    Solid Forum
    Web Links
    Calendar
    Wish List
    Sitemap
    Picture Album
    Contact Us

    I mean most of this I can deal with, but Picture Album, WTF. Do we
    really need a repository of screen shots and pics that mean nothing to
    anyone but the person that posted them?

    Anyways, I can't bash that site to much, I do have a login for
    it.......

    Eng-tips.com is my preferred forum. I don't know what you mean by
    10lbs of content in 5lbs site. The site loads fast, is robust and well
    managed. Normally, answers come quick to questions, and those answers
    are actually useful (something that isn't nearly as common on this
    message board). Contributors are very gracious and often go out of
    their way to provide solutions, including creating macros from scratch
    and researching standards. Additionally, there's an extensive FAQ
    section for questions that are actually asked frequently. :)

    Yeah, this place is banquered - sux bigtime. Between that and the
    paranoid MI5 and the people sell9ing shit on ebay, and the offtopic
    crossposted bullshit, there;'s not much going on here anymore.

    By the way, you can filter if you use a real news reader with a real
    news server. Yahoo groups doesn't allow any of that.

    Several better sites.

    SW corporate forums have lot of activity and some people who know. Lots
    of cluelessness and SW employees tend to just mine it for info while not
    answering questions.

    www.solidmentor.com - good bang for the buck. Has a cool wish list.
    Banquers are banned there.

    eng-tips - lots of activity, more bluster than content, though. Banquers
    are banned here too.

    productdesignforums.com - good place for surfacing content.

    Why is it every time I read one of your posts I get the feeling that I
    Because you are. You're being sold on my opinion.
    Does Solidmentor sell stock?
    Canadian or US?
    Not even close.
    Hope so. I like new tools.
    I like pictures. Other people like pictures. If you don't like
    pictures don't look at them. :>)
    So does almost everyone who posts here and almost everyone who posts
    here checks out Solidmentor *frequently* even if they have never
    posted there. It's only a matter of time before they do post to
    Solidmentor because a well moderated web forum will have the
    Solidworks content advantage if it's run right and Solidmentor is run
    right.

    This newsgroup has the advantage of being able to post what ever you
    want to post which at times can be very useful.

    This newsgroup does not have the SolidWorks content advantage any
    longer, though.

    Eng-tips.com is my preferred forum.

    You prefer to support a large corporation rather than a creative
    Solidworks user who does more for the Solidworks community than
    Tecumseh will ever do. Brilliant.

    Issues much? :) The corp doesn't make money from my wallet. As far
    as your students comment goes...well, how is a distinction even made
    between who is a student and who is not? I've not see evidence of
    this rule, but if it does exist, it's uninforceble.

    To anyone that says its more this or that than actual content; I say,
    you haven't contributed to it or used it to a point past just glancing
    it over. There's more useful content there than on this board by a
    long shot.

    Enough about that though. There's many forums to pick from. Have
    fun! I recommend trying them all out. You'll find yourself
    gravitating to particular ones because those are the ones that work
    best for you.

    As you have come to expect...many. :>)

    So was Eng-Tips banning me. Totally unenforceable. Busted their
    banning in seconds but why should I post there when the owner of
    Solidmentor is intelligent enough to figure out who I am? **** Eng-
    Tips. **** their moderators. **** their hostile student policy and
    **** Tecumsah... their gas engines are nothing special.

    You have still not answered why you're not posting at a site run by a
    creative Solidworks user rather than some corporation with its head up
    its ass.

    Here are Eng-Tips policies:

    "The following activities can result in deletion of posts, deletion of
    threads and/or restriction of further site usage. Members who engage
    in any of the following activities may be red flagged by the
    membership. Management of this site does not read any post unless it
    has been red flagged by a member. In no particular order, here are
    some common offenses:

    * Selling
    * Recruiting
    * Student Posting
    * Profanity
    * Cross Posting
    * Tack-On Posting. If you have a new question, start a new thread.
    * Arguing in an Unprofessional Manner
    * Posting of Personal Information
    * Posting Anything Illegal (including hacking, cracking,
    passwords, etc.)
    * Defamatory Posting
    * Shill Posting, or posting made at the behest of a company
    * Leeching (members posting only questions, and never helping
    others)
    * Irritating Other Members"
