FYI
Okay. Let me get it out of the way before anyone else get's to it (if I am not too late). "I cannot believe SolidWorks is putting out 2006 beta when they haven't fixed all the bugs in 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 99, 98 Plus, 98, 97 Plus, 97....(before that I wasn't a user). Blah Blah Blah and Waahhhhh! I would now hope with that said we can all particpate in the Beta program and make 2006 hopefully a strong solid release. Can we keep this constructive! Great. KM
The beta testers are a mystery bunch to me. Part of me would like to be a beta tester, but how does one do it? Don't beta testers have jobs with work to do? I could never risk using beta software on live jobs. I can't hardly risk newly released software on live jobs. It would seem to me like a lot of people are just signing up to see all the cool new feature and are just fooling around with it for fun. It's hard to believe serous testing could be getting done when one still has to make a living and keep the boss happy. I also find it kind of funny that we pay service fees to have this work done for us. Anywho, happy beta testing people!
Come on be at least a little realistic. I have beta tested the last 4 releases, and all I have to say is............................ what the hell else would you do between midnight and 4 a.m.? Me
you forgot to say that- 1)its definitely slower than the previous release 2)some of the best goodies dangled at SWW got dropped and others are half done 3)its not likely to be any better at sp0 than any other release great super who loves you baby... ;o)
I hope 2006 comes out on DVD, I hate this bloody disc changing to install or just to get a service pack on!!!! RANT RANT RANT,!!!! Why o why, does the help files come as a separate zip file?? doh! Pdmworks in another file Pdmworks client in another file sw explorer in another file Edrawing in another file The list goes on! Just one download file with all of the sp items in, and let windows installer sort out what is required to update, with maybe just some question tabs to tick on what you would like to update.
Well, the obvious answer to the all in one question is why would I want to download an extra 200 meg of stuff I don't need? We don't have office and so don't need a bunch of the updates, so with an a-la-carte menu, I only take what I need. As far as changing CD's, copy the main install to a network drive and then install from there. That way the SP's will also look there and no flipping necessary. WT
You can get rid of the disk changing if you have more than one seat to install by doing and administrative install. The AI also makes it possible to go back to square one a lot easier.
You can do that with just one seat as well. Updating an administrative Image is much easier than switching disks.
Anyone know how to does this Adminstrative Install? I uninstall and re-install every now and then when things get funky and that would just plain rule.
Go to http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/ServicePacks.html and then to the SolidWorks Administrative Director item. This is probably what you are looking for. We don't use an admin image here because I don't necessarily want to update everyone at the same time. There's a certain bit of comfort in not touching a machine that is working fine for that user - leave it alone. It's also handy to have more than one SP, graphics card, etc available to test different things. But, I do copy the install cd's & the SP's onto a network drive so I don't have to flip any cd's. I also created a batch file to set up a new machine - it loads SW, copies the reg settings, copies our custom templates & the custom properties text file, and creates the folder & copies the macros into the local drive to tie them to the hotkeys.
