Automatic printing to a PS or PDF file

Discussion in 'Pro/Engineer & Creo Elements/Pro' started by Jeroen Dekker, Apr 9, 2004.

  1. Running Pro-E on Windows.

Is there a way to print drawings to a PostScript or PDF file (so not
using the native PS export) without prompting a dialog that asks the
user for a file name and destination?

So that just by a click of a button, myfile.pdf is created from
myfile.drw using predefined settings and target directory?

    Hi Jeroen,

if You don´t mind it´s in german - there has been a very good article
about how to build a PDF server using Ghostscript in a german computer
magazine called c´t (Issue No. 6/2004). If it´s windnose You´re using
this might be of interest for You (mail me if You want a copy).

Using UNIX I print "generic PS" and convert using ps2pdf (ghostscript).
This can off course be automatized easily, too.

    Regards

  5. Thank you all for your suggestions.

However, please keep in mind that

    - I cannot use Pro-E's native PS output (it doesn't handle embedded
files and images well). The PostScript or PDF has to be generated via
a (Windows) printer driver. From looking at the instructions you have
pointed me to, it is not really clear how you create the PostScript
files for GhostScript to 'distill' to PDF.

    - If I can get PostScript without the interactive dialogue, and
without using the native PS output, then I don't need to go to PDF
    anymore.

Thank you for any clarification you can provide regarding the above
    points.

Install a printer driver for e.g. a HP DesignJet 750C Plus PS and
    choose the option
'Print to file' and you'll have a PostScript file you can use with
    GhostScript.

as John already said, the restrictions you mentioned come with the
"generic" postscript only. I have good results here with postscript
files generated using both a HP DesignJet 750C "driver" (to print
drawings to a HP DesignJet 600 in b&w only, actually) and one for
    Tektronix Phaser for shaded gfx.

I use the ps3pdf converter to deliver documents via email, never tried
what will happen if pdf files are sent to a printer directly...

    Cheers
