Automatic Boundary using Window?

I have a large irregular object, drawn in "flat" space ("0" Z coords).
It has many internal lines. I want to make a closed boundary polyline
around the object, without having to pick every single intersection
and endpoint on the outer perimter of the object, to determine the
area of the object, and to make it stand out as one item among many.
Is it possible to make a "boundary" polyline around it using a window?
I tried to get this to work, but "boundary" command will take only
internal points of an item, which won't work in this case because I
have many internal lines. Do I make sense? Is there a way to do
    this?
