AutoCAD "AM" layers, out-of-the-box

Is there any way to figure out what the standard AutoCAD layers are assigned to, and how do you rename them? For instance, in AutoCAD 2004 Mechanical DX, there are those wonderful "AM_1, AM_2, AM_3, AM_PAREF, etc." layer names...I'd rather have my dimensions on a yellow layer named "dim", as opposed to a green layer named "AM_4".

What ever happened to the good 'ol days of new geometry being assigned to the current layer?

Thanks in advance for the help!
