I intend to start learning Autocad via online courses soon.
The new Autocad 2006 will only run on 2k or Xp.

My current pc is running 98 se. I'll have to upgrade to one or the other.

Any opinions on which I should use?

My pc purchased new in 2000 is:
    Compaq Presario 5900T
    Intel Pentium III 800/133mhz
    256mb pc133 SDRAM
    40gb HD
    32mb nVidia GeForce II
DVD, CD, Sound card, speakers, etc.

I really can't afford to buy a new computer now. I can only afford the classes.
I WILL buy another 256mb ram though.

    I'm thinking I should go with 2k.
    What say ye?

Don't know about w2k, got our office full og win-XP-pro systems.
    No problems running autocad.
Think that your computer is a bit short to run all the stuff.
Maybe you're better off with autocad 2000/2002 they do run on win98.

XP Pro with service pack 2 is ideal. I never understood why people don't
like it or have problems with it. It works fine in our environment. Much of
the "junk" can be turned off with a few mouse clicks.

As a hold over until you get a new PC, Windows 2000 will work fine. Just be
sure to load spk 4, IE 6 and Windows updates after installing it.

Also, Never Upgrade. Always backup your data, format the drive and install
the OS fresh. Why carry over potential problems?

    Windows XP is the ticket.

You will need at leas 512 Mb of RAM and a new hard drive.

Dunno about Autocad, but Terramodel just shuts down occasionally when
doing some hard thinking when running on XP - never happens on W2k.

I run it on an xp Toshiba notebook 1.5 Ghz (a bit slow but okay), and
an old IBM desktop w2k at home - 300 mhz (slower but steadier).

I got all the extra bullshit on the xp so I can make movie cd's to
send to my wife's home in phils., else I'd shitcan xp on the notebook.
I suspect Toshiba's unfortunately got it hardwired for xp anyway.

    I'd go with s2k.

Autocad becomes Autocrash on Win 98 if you do serious work.

Win98 will crash itself without provocation.
