Ok, I know there is a way of controlling what "profile" you are using
when cad is started.. ie: being able to have a diff profile for each
    shortcut.

    my question is this:

Is there a way to have publish open automaticly once cad starts?
(the end product would be "similar" to the way batch plot worked, ie: a
seperate window that won't effect your work)

    TIA

If you want to run the PUBLISH command on startup you have to add (command
    "publish") to it.
Another way if you don't want different profiles but different icons is to
use a script file. Add publish to the script file and call it with the
command line argument in the target of the icon properties to something like
    "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2004\acad.exe" /B "c:\publish.scr"
