For about 18 months..... Great for 64 bit apps, but wonky as hell for
a lot of 32 bit apps and hardware. Software support is also limited.

I run MS Virtual Machine on WIN64 with XP32 loaded for those apps that
refuse to run in the 64bit environment. Unfortunately, hardware
support on the VM is limited. I get by.

    I just started using a Dell 64-bit machine w/ 2 processors and, now, 2
GB of RAM. What do you suggest I can do to optimize the performance
of SW (2008 in my case?).. I've been on it for a couple of weeks and
all seems OK other than the random crash here and there, before upping
    to 2GB.

    Thank you.

I'm just about to upgrade to a 64 bit system with at least 8Gb of
memory.....can You give some examples of things which are not working.
Got a Dell M65 as well on the desk so I imagine I can run a lot of
    other apps on that one.

Drivers are pretty scarce for older hardware. I was unable to run a
two year old scanner and a 4 yo HP printer. My virtual keyboard (USB)
    won't work, ERP software won't run(QAD) . That's just the few issues I
    can recall.

I'd be forced to run another machine, were it not for MS VM. It is a
free download from MS and is very simple to configure. It does require
having seperate licenses for each VM you install, along with SW
licenses for any other apps you need to run from the VM. The VM has
full network capability and supports cut and paste from/to the host
machine. It is pretty much like having a separate PC, but I wouldn't
want to run any graphically intensive apps on it as it is limited in
    graphics performance.

    Thanks Dave

I'm looking at a Dell Precision T4700 with 8Gb of internal mem, and as
far as I can see now I'll have to make sure drivers to plotter and
printer will work. If I need anything else I can hook it up to the
laptop. I've been running to computers side by side up till now
anyhow. My cad machine has almost nothing else than SW installed in
order to keep SW out of disturbance. Graphic card is beginning to get
a bit slow too and it's old enough to not have a dvd-player, so I
can't even install SW2008 on it.

    I'll dig deeper into this...
